Board Certified surgeons Bernard W. Chang, M.D., Craig A. Vander Kolk, M.D., and Brendan Collins, M.D., offer a full range of leading-edge cosmetic procedures, with particular expertise in facial surgery, body contouring, breast augmentation, tummy tuck and liposuction. Working in tandem with a skilled team of physician assistants and a committed office staff, Drs. Chang, Vander Kolk and Collins provide a warm and friendly setting in which patient’s needs are carefully and thoughtfully addressed.

    Dr. Chang is widely recognized as a regional expert in cosmetic surgery and has been featured in Good Housekeeping Magazine. Before coming to Mercy, he was director of breast surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. With particular areas of expertise in abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast augmentation, and facial rejuvenation, he offers patients advanced, state-of-the-art procedures in combination with particular clinical skill. Dr. Chang has over 20 years of medical experience as a plastic surgeon and serves as the director of the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Mercy.

    Dr. Vander Kolk has a distinguished reputation of clinical excellence in the field of cosmetic, cleft and craniofacial surgery. Baltimore Magazine named him one of Baltimore’s “Top Docs” in the fields of Plastic Surgery and Pediatric Plastic Surgery. Dr. Vander Kolk came to Mercy after 20 years of experience at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he is a full professor and maintains part-time privileges. He has performed hundreds of facelifts and over one thousand rhinoplasties. His broad experience has drawn patients with a wide array of cosmetic concerns to seek out his opinion and surgical ability.

    Dr. Collins is Board Certified in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery. He is the recipient of numerous prestigous awards in his field and has a variety of peer-reviewed publications, book chapters and international presentations to his credit. His broad range of surgical skills includes not only a wide variety of cosmetic surgeries but also advanced microsurgery for breast reconstruction.

    Most cosmetic surgeries are not covered by insurance. Because many cosmetic procedures are not covered due to a lack of 'medical necessity', Cosmetic Medicine at Mercy provides financing options.

    No. We do not charge a fee for cosmetic consultation.

  8. I live outside of Baltimore. Are there arrangements that can be made to facilitate travel and recovery for my family and myself?
    Yes. Many of our patients travel from out-of-state and enjoy the accommodations provided at the Tremont Hotel (across the street from Mercy Medical Center) at special rates for our patients and their families. These arrangements may be made by contacting The Tremont Hotel at 410-727-2222.
  9. Do I need a referral from my primary care doctor before being seen?
    Please refer to your individual insurance coverage to determine if you need a referral to see a specialist, as it varies by individual insurance plan. A referral is not necessary if you are interested in pursuing a cosmetic procedure.
  10. Do Drs. Chang, Vander Kolk and Collins only perform surgery downtown at Mercy Medical Center?
    Drs. Chang, Vander Kolk and Collins feel that the best and safest place for surgery is in the hospital. As Plastic Surgeons, they frequently assist or are assisted by other surgeons and physicians. This allows them to take advantage of the expertise of many specialists onsite. In the event patients require any additional consultations or encounter an emergency situation, Mercy Medical Center has state-of-the-art Anesthesia, Radiology, Intensive Care, Emergency Services, Laboratory Support and Pastoral Services. Most cosmetic surgeries are performed at Mercy's Surgery Center at Weinberg, conveniently located on the third floor of The Weinberg Center.
